Short Tale Challenge #8 - Mangroves Pantoum Poem

“Each Tuesday, Edwin Ronald Lambert will be putting up a prompt and you can simply publish a post on your own blog responding to the prompt.

Today’s prompt is “Mangroves”

I know the word Mangroves, in New Zealand we don’t have many Mangroves while studying to write this poem I learned so much.

mangrove is a shrub or small tree that grows in coastal saline or brackish water.
Mangroves are salt tolerant trees and adapted to life in harsh coastal conditions.
Containing a complex salt filtration system, in the roots to cope with the conditions
They are adapted to the low oxygen (anoxic) conditions of waterlogged mud.

About 110 species are considered "mangroves" that have adapted to low oxygen

Mangroves in the sense of being a tree that grows in a saline swamp and survives.

Red mangroves, which can survive in the most inundated areas store salt in cells

They prop above the water level with stilt roots absorbing air through pores in the bark.

Red mangroves exclude salt by having significantly impermeable roots

Acting as an ultra-filtration mechanism to exclude sodium salts from the rest of the plant.

Interesting fact.
Because of the limited fresh water available in salty intertidal soils, mangroves limit the amount of water they lose through their leaves.
